What started as a band paying homage to Brazilian artist Chico Science became a big hit that really made waves and changed the contemporary Pinoy rock scene. The band members started out as college students from Ateneo de Manila University. Mong Alcaraz, Miguel Chavez, Joel Salvador and Carlos Calderon were those college kids, who took in guitarist Sonny Baquisal and Eugene Esquivias to make their gig-playing move from mere dabbling to a full-fledged rock music career. Since then, they have really risen up the ranks and became at par with other Pinoy rock artists that rock Manila today. Up and Running Like many other rock bands, they started out with Battle of the Bands. But unlike most who do not hit past the awarding stage to start status, they were able to land themselves a contract with EMI-Virgin records. They did this by investing their prize money to making a demo album, which did not just give them satisfaction but also a famous name to back it up. And it was an investment which gave priceless returns, indeed. Brazilian Twist Originally, they were named Chico Science. Apparently, there is another dead Brazilian artist who shared the same name. To avoid confusion, they shortened their name to ChicoSci, and was known all over the Philippines as the band that brought the song “Paris” to fame. Ushering New Era of Pinoy Rock They were one of the prime movers who ushered a new style of Pinoy rock. Their albums “Revenge of the Giant Robot in the year 2000 and Method of Breathing in 2002 was the ticket that skyrocketed them to fame. Truly, the tracks in their album brought hits in the Mtv hit charts. Tracks such as “Sink or Swim”, “Amen”, Soopahfly and the more recent “A Promise” and “7 Black Roses” continued to make them the famous name that they are today. Rumored to be Chemical Copycats There have been rumors that they are imitating the style of My Chemical Romance, a foreign band, but this rumor remains to be unfounded despite certain similarities in their musical style and video concepts. Still, they render a Pinoy appeal that no other foreign band can ever duplicate. Whether they derived inspiration from My Chemical Romance or not, they are still able to make a name and stay in this business because they have excellent concepts and good music. Gig gigolos They are always filled with gig schedules. Their star status did not diminish their fervor for playing in gigs, not even for one bit. They are quite passionate for what they do, and they have garnered quite a following. They even have their own forum dedicated specifically just for them and they have tons and tons of websites celebrating their music and success in the Pinoy rock scene. Since gig schedules are all over the web for this really impressive band, you can catch them live in various venues and take a hold of authentic and high quality Pinoy rock only from Chicosci.
